Alexandra Watson has been teaching college level writing for seven years, at Columbia University and Barnard College, and has facilitated community writing workshops with Apogee as well as personal essay writing workshops for high school students with the nonprofits Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America and the Brotherhood Sister Sol (BroSis).
In her teaching, she emphasizes narrative craft techniques alongside acknowledgement of power structures that inform mainstream literary culture. She is highly engaged with the theory and practice of inclusive pedagogy--her teaching and editing practice revolve around empowering students from diverse backgrounds to identify and articulate their positions through writing. Her pedagogy is influenced by Paulo Freire, bell hooks, and Audre Lorde.
